Our protagonist, let’s call him a newcomer, fresh-faced and idealistic, was assigned to this very division. His job: protect and recover victims affected by cheat items. You know the kind, mind control artifacts, time-stopping pendants, reality-warping trinkets. Items that turn ordinary people into puppets. The department’s mission is noble on paper. Find the broken ones. Shelter them. Nurse them back to some semblance of sanity. Erase their traumatic memories. Release them back into the world, blissfully unaware.
Simple, right?
His first assignment took him to an apartment complex marked “completely deserted” on every map. But when he opened that empty room, he found them. Women. Some huddled in corners, others staring blankly at walls. All of them had been toyed with, violated, and broken—over and over again, by the cruel whims of cheat item users. His heart clenched. This was why he’d joined. To help.
Days turned into weeks. He fed them, comforted them, watched them slowly piece themselves back together. It was exhausting, draining work. But there was a strange intimacy in it, the trust in their eyes, the way they leaned on him for safety.
Then one day, his senior officer clapped him on the shoulder. “You can handle the rest by yourself.” And just like that, the senior was gone. No oversight. No supervision.
The newcomer stood alone in that quiet room, surrounded by sleeping victims who would soon have their memories wiped. They wouldn’t remember a thing. No one would ever know what happened in these walls. And in that silence, a whisper slithered into his mind: After this, they’re going to have all their memories wiped and be set free anyway.
